Iceland's East: From Djúpivogur to Mjóifjörður

An East Iceland journey from Djúpivogur through Berufjörður and the coastal fjords to remote Mjóifjörður, following turquoise rivers, basalt mountains, sheep pastures, lighthouses, snowy passes, and isolated fishing settlements.
Day 4 begins on the coast near Djúpivogur, where small lighthouses, dark volcanic rock, and bright water mark the meeting of the Eastfjords and the open Atlantic. The road bends into Berufjörður beneath immense terraces of basalt, passing quiet farms and flocks of sheep before reaching the vivid blue water and layered cascades of the Fossá River. At Sveinsstekksfoss, the river gathers its force and drops through a narrow gorge on its way to the fjord.
Beyond the waterfall, the landscape keeps changing with every headland: broad valleys, snow-streaked peaks, grazing sheep, roadside falls, and a coast washed in sudden sunlight. Seals rest in the shallows while lighthouses and scattered farm buildings punctuate the empty shore. The weather shifts just as quickly, from clear blue sky to low cloud wrapped around the mountain passes.
The final road crosses the high ground and descends in mist toward Mjóifjörður. Klifbrekkufossar threads down the mountainside beside the switchbacks, revealing the narrow fjord below. At the water’s edge, fishing boats, weathered sheds, old tractors, flower-bright fields, and the small church preserve the human scale of one of Iceland’s most secluded communities.
